Back at the beginning of September I wrote a post about how I’m a part of AT&T’s “It’s what you do with what we do” campaign. AT&T gave me an HTC One X phone to test out(and one to giveaway in today’s post!) and see how I could make it fit my lifestyle as a food blogger. Immediately I set it up to use for social media and photo sharing. Over the last month I’ve had a lot of fun using the camera phone and 4G to tweet and post on Facebook more candid photos while I was cooking and setting up shots for blog posts. Thankfully I really haven’t ran into any bumps with the phone; you can read all about how I set it up in my first post.
The main thing I was interested in was using the 8 megapixel f2.0 camera to get great shots on the go and finding apps that would help enhance them. I found it really easy to take photos, work with them between apps, and upload them to the internet quickly. The big screen and big buttons makes it easier to see smaller details and work through the phone. And I found an Android app for just about anything I could need, from tweeting to reading my Kindle ebooks. I focused a lot on finding and trying photo apps that tied in with the great camera; I thought I’d share some of my favorites that I came across.
As a sidenote, I use Instagram a lot(@EvanThomas) but don’t talk about it here. It’s not one of my favorite apps for taking and editing photos, but it’s the only one with a social component. More often than not I’ll edit photos in one of the other apps and upload it to Instagram.
My favorite photo for editing photos was a new one I found in the app store called pixlr-o-matic. I’m hardly exaggerating when I say this app has just about any effect you could ask for. There are literally hundreds of filters, borders, and textures to choose from. If you’re getting bored of the standard old Instagram features, this is definitely the best one to switch to.
I love the texture effects that add flares to the photos. As someone who’s worked with developing film, those are very hard to get naturally, so having the option to digitally manipulate them is awesome. Some of these filters and textures are so great that I’ve been using their online version to edit photos I take with my DSLR before sharing them online.
My favorite app is still Pudding Camera. I’ll usually take photos with this app and edit or share them in others afterwards. The interface is simply fun and easy to manage and it has just the right options so that there’s something for every occasion.
I’m really obsessed with the motion x4 setting which takes 4 different exposures. It’s useless for food photography but adds an interesting touch to pictures of large spaces. The fantasy setting is great if you want a focus center and soft blur around the edges to give a low aperture impression.
Not a photo app but an app I’ve really loved nonetheless—Out Of Milk is an app that keeps track of your shopping and other lists. There are a lot of apps like this but this one was my clear favorite. You can have different groups, such as items you always need to get every week. You can also cross an item off your list without deleting it, which I found helpful for the items I knew I’d need to add back on the list as soon as I got home. And there’s a part that keeps track of what you already have in your pantry.

I also tweeted!
I’ve recently become an active blogger and I am going to post recipes occasionally. I’ve been using the net to find recipes for a long time. This year I’ve been looking for gluten free recipes which is why I follow your blog.
Question, is this giveaway open internationally?
Yes!
i always have either my phone or computer in the kitchen with me, either to look up recipes i’ve tagged OR just to have music playing while i cook.
i’d love a new (bigger) phone so i have more screen space! mine is tiny.
follow you already!
i look stuff up on my phone ALL the time, and use it to look for good places to eat in my area
I use the recipe app by allthecooks.com to display recipes while I cook, and keep track of my shopping list, and then the myfitnesspal app to count calories. Probably wouldn’t cook without my smartphone
I love just browsing websites (like yours) or other cooking apps for dinner ideas…. and then i usually modify the recipes based on what i have, what’s in season, what looks good at the store. I definitely need to use an app for my grocery list… so many times i leave it at home!
I use recipage and stumbleupon to find lots of new recipes and websites to follow; and I always check the blogroll.
I use the internet all the time for recipe inspiration. I love Pinterest for bookmarking!
I’ve never, ever had a smartphone so winning this would be a dream of magnificence, in truth! So far, I use technology by way of the magical internetland to find inspiration for recipes. I’m looking forward to one day joining the world of instagram and food photo sharing, though!
Like you on Facebook!
I love the Out of Milk ap. My favorite is that you can take pictures of the bar code and it automatically loads. Mostly I use my phone to find new recipes while I’m waiting in line although I do love the Map my Bike a too! Although I dont’ have nearly as cool of a phone as this!
I use technology to look up new recipies to assit with my cooking adventures. i go to pintrest on my computer or my phone to learn sweet new ways to make food.

I.use great blogs like Wannabe be Chef to help me with ideas in my cooking adventures. Being a vegetarian it is great to have access to good recipes and ideas.
With only a careful press by the tip of a clean finger, Chef-assistant Siri pops up and I tell her precise timing countdown instructions. Having this function on my phone would make more sense but I opted for the iPad. Now if something like a timer could be voice activated…

What a cool phone and apps! I only have a simple prepaid phone for emergencies, no internet or texting, so about the most techie I get about food is to use my point and shoot to take photos for a new blog I started and to use the computer to pin and bookmark recipes. I find so many on-line that I am not using my cookbooks as I really like being able to print them out and read comments/ratings on them.
I tweeted, twittered, er, twatted about it!
I love using my phone to look up recipes that I’m making, or to look up helpful hints while working away in the kitchen. Thanks for sharing about your favorite apps too!

Im always looking up easy recipes on my phone when my mom is too tired to cook. (:
Love apps for cooking. Epicurious is a great one for finding a recipe in a pinch. I also liked your Facebook page (although I won’t like AT&T).
I need a new phone so bad! I would love to be able to look up recipes when I’m at the farmer’s market and faced with some fabulous veg I’ve never heard of and don’t know how to use – that’s how I would use this phone if I’m lucky enough to win. 🙂

Goggling recipes. finding out what the foreign ingredients in the recipes are, spending an enormous amount of time staring at beautiful desserts and wishing i had the skill/talent to make them, Bribing my family with delicious pictures of food that I bookmark in my “willcooksoon” tab <3 god, i love baking.
I use my phone to look up recipes when I can’t remember the ingredients exactly but mostly I use it for taking pictures of my creations (both successful and disastrous) and sending the photos to friends and family. My laptop is my recipe database with all my favorite and need-to-try recipes saved and bookmarked.
I’m not too much of a cook..so I use apps to get recipes for EVERYTHING! :3
i use my phone to listen to music, look up recipes and any doubts i might be having, and lastly to set timers while i cook 🙂
i liked you and at&t on facebook as well !
I travel a fair bit, and take photos and video snippets of and around food 🙂 I’m just getting into video editing, and it would be great to compile shots right in the phone!
With the HTC I can look up recipes and write down my own and also make videos to post my ideas on youtube or share them around. I can also use it to buy ingredients or to see the cheapest and best options on the go.
