When I first arrived back in Providence, one of the very first things I did was stop by the newly opened Wildflour bakery which specializes in vegan and gluten-free pastries. Clearly, I have my priorities.
The bakery had a really friendly atmosphere. The staff were more than helpful with any and all questions we had on their baked goods. And there were a lot. Everything in the showcase(pictured above) was vegan, and on the shelf above that sat out the vegan/gluten-free baked good. The choices was almost mind blowing considering I feel lucky to be able to order 1 or 2 things off of a menu usually.
We finally settled on a gluten-free brownie and raw cheesecake to split between 3 people. One of the workers told me that the gluten-free brownie was better than their “regular” brownie, so it certainly seemed promising. The cheesecake was on the pricier side but considering the size of it and the work that goes into raw cheesecake I knew we had to try it.
Ultimately, the brownie paled comparison to the cheesecake. It tasted a little starchy and overly sweet without that deep richness that a good brownie has. I thought that some of my brownies tasted better than that and my parents agreed(and not just because they’re my parents I hope).
I really enjoyed the cheesecake. My guess at the recipe would be a thin almond/date crust with a filling made of soaked cashews, coconut cream, lemon juice, and agave, covered with coconut flakes and raw chocolate syrup, kind of similar to my recipe. But aren’t things always so much better when someone else makes them for you?
In short, I will definitely be back; there are too many desserts I haven’t tried yet, and I could always use a break from baking. Oh, they also serve raw juices, but who wants that when you have cheesecake staring you in the face? That’s what I thought.
I find these pictures slightly cruel at 8 oclock in the morning, when, I know, that my breakfast can NOT consist of pastries…!
love,

Yum! I wish we had a Wildflour Bakery in SC!
I tried the raw cheesecake the other day too! It’s really good but….doesn’t taste like cheesecake. It actually seemed to taste more similar to tiramisu. I don’t know — I’m certainly no expert on raw desserts, though, so maybe that’s how it’s SUPPOSED to taste?? I did really like the coconutty flavor though. And I agree – it was pretty expensive. I want to go back and try the peanut butter brownie. One day I stopped in really quick and they had free samples of something out that was amazing and I haven’t quite figured out what it was yet. Gives me an excuse to keep going back and trying new things. 😉
Oh — and the juices are actually pretty good!! At least, the one I tried was.
Looks like you guys made some great choices. I love small, specialty bakeries like this one!
The desserts in this bakery look super delicious for sure! Great review!
That cheesecake looks amazing!! I need to find myself a place with raw desserts. I am so intrigued by them but don’t want to make them myself.
Love the pictures and your choices! Dare I say that they look better than the things I saw at BabyCakes here in NYC? I do. 🙂
Wow that cheesecake sounds amazing! I love finding little shops that specialize in vegan/vegetarian foods and giving them a try. It’s pretty amazing what they can do!
that cheesecake looks SOOO delicious. i can see how the brownie could be just ok, though. esp with your skills!
Ha…that would definitely be one of my first stops too!
My pulse most definitely quickened a bit at the thought of so many delicious-looking vegan dessert options. Yum!!
Yeah that cheesecake sounds AMAZING. I’m not a fan of “real” cheesecake (unless it’s the Godiva kind from the Cheesecake Factory), but I’ve had the raw versions before and they blow the dairy versions out of the water!
Oh we have to go out that way next week. I think I can convince Hunni to stop for dessert 🙂
I have yet to experience a raw cheesecake, but its definitely on my list of things to try!
I love bakeries that consider different dietary needs. Something for everyone!
a bakery with all those options…yeah, i would have been skipping the juice too 🙂

That’s awesome that such a bakery exists! I’ve pretty much given up on baked goods as an option outside of what I’ll make myself, so I hope that your experiments show that they have stuff that’s really good.
Actually, I might very well go for a juice if I was also having something heavy and decadent–balancing, ya know?
That is really cool that you have a vegan / gluten free bakery!! They are definitely on the right track in targeting people with those food requirements 🙂
That raw cheesecake looks like a lamington! I’m in love!
Ohhhhhmygoodness, this looks like heaven! We have a vegan, gluten-free bakery around my neck of the woods, but it’s a bit too sugary for my taste. This cheesecake looks FABULOUS!:)
SO cool to be able to visit a vegan and gluten free bakery!!! Thank you for letting us visit along with you! 🙂
I am surprised your mom enjoyed the fake cheese!
I’ve got a question for you! Are you a student at Brown? RISD?
Looks awesome, my dear, but I sort of feel as though your own baked goods are just as good or better, and you get to enjoy the fun of making them 🙂
Still, hooray for vegan businesses!
Hold the phone! What are you doing in Providence? Do you go to school there? I’m originally from RI!! What a small world 🙂
I went to school in Providence, and I graduated right before this bakery opened. I was so bummed when I heard about it, haha.
